Standard residential panels measure 4 feet wide and come in lengths of 8, 10, or 12 feet, with thicknesses running from ½ inch (the default for most walls) to ⅝ inch (required by code in many fire-rated assemblies, per IRC Section R302).
The scope of DIY drywall work breaks into two distinct categories that require different skills and toolsets:
- Repair work — patching holes, replacing water-damaged sections, re-taping failed seams, and skim-coating over texture
- Installation work — hanging new panels on framed walls or ceilings, taping, mudding, and finishing to a paintable surface

How it works
The actual structural logic of drywall is simple: gypsum panels attach to wood or metal framing at 16-inch or 24-inch stud intervals, seams get reinforced with paper or mesh tape embedded in joint compound, and successive coats of compound feather out to create a surface smooth enough to hold paint. The Gypsum Association's GA-216 finishing standards define five finish levels, from Level 0 (panels hung but not taped, used in garages or utility spaces) to Level 5 (skim-coated, required under flat or gloss paint or in raking light conditions).
For repairs, the mechanism is essentially the same — the goal is to recreate the structural continuity of the paper face and the cosmetic continuity of the surface. Small holes under ½ inch typically need only joint compound. Holes between ½ inch and 6 inches generally call for a California patch or a mesh patch kit. Holes larger than 6 inches require a backer board or a new piece of drywall cut to fit between studs, with proper fastening and taped seams.

Setting-type compound (hot mud) chemically cures through a hydration reaction, regardless of drying conditions. It comes in powder form and generates heat as it sets. Common formulations are labeled by approximate working time: 20-minute, 45-minute, 90-minute. It sands poorly after full cure and cannot be rehydrated. Use it for first coats on repairs where strength matters.
Drying-type compound (pre-mixed, "all-purpose" or "lightweight") dries through water evaporation and shrinks slightly as it does. It feathers beautifully and sands easily, making it the right choice for finish coats. The trade-off is time — a full coat in standard humidity needs at least 24 hours before sanding or re-coating.
Common scenarios
Drywall problems fall into predictable patterns. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development identifies gypsum board repair as one of the most frequently cited items in residential rehabilitation assessments. The four scenarios that come up most often:
- Nail pops — fasteners backing out of studs, typically from lumber shrinkage. Fix: drive a drywall screw 2 inches above and below the pop, recess the old fastener, apply two compound coats.
- Corner bead damage — metal or vinyl bead on outside corners dents readily. Fix: straighten, re-fasten, or replace the bead section; blend with compound.
- Water-damaged panels — compromised gypsum is structurally soft and harbors mold. Fix: replacement is mandatory; compound over wet damage is a known failure mode and a potential indoor air quality issue per EPA mold guidance.
- Popped or cracked seams — typically from framing movement or inadequate original taping. Fix: re-tape with paper tape and compound; mesh tape alone without adequate compound cover produces hairline cracking within 1–2 seasons.

Decision boundaries
Not every drywall job belongs on a DIY task list. The decision turns on four factors:
Panel area and ceiling work. Hanging drywall on ceilings solo is a studied exercise in frustration — and risk.
